1887 – The First Coupon

Coca-Cola promoted its product with hand-written tickets dubbed “coupons” (from the French couper meaning “to cut”).  These coupons gave holders free samples of the new fountain drink, then priced at 5?.  This innovative marketing strategy made both Coca-Cola and coupon household phrases.

1912 – Coupons become the Industry Standard

Charles William (C.W.) Post used a multi-faceted marketing strategy to promote his Instant Postum cereal beverage.  The strategy includes extensive advertising, free samples, product demonstrations, plant tours, recipe booklets, and coupons.

1920s – Coupons team up with print advertising to create mail-in rebates

In 1921, magazines started carrying coupons advertising a Palmolive trial-size soap cake; consumers just had to cut out the coupon and mail it to Palmolive to receive their soap.

In 1928, Colgate & Co. offered a similar mail-in rebate for a free sample of Rapid Shave Cream.

Other retailers began offering coupons and mail-in rebates for products such as Pepsodent, Deodo, and electronics.  Coupons could be found in periodicals as well as on product packaging.

1930s – Great Depression forces families to cut costs with coupons

Declining stock prices and rising unemployment rates in the first half of the decade compelled many families to overhaul they way they earned and spent money.  Retailers, desperate to attract consumer attention, responded by offering more coupons than ever for all sorts of products from hygiene to food.  Grocers and retailers started offering coupons as well to encourage business in stores.  Clipping coupons became a way of life for affected families so that they could afford basic needs like groceries.

1940s – World War II heralds rationing

As production resources are repurposed for the war effort, everyday goods were rationed heavily to the civilian population.  Everything from cars and oil to meat and coffee were available in limited supply.  To make sure that every citizen got his or her fair share, the government issued ration books full of ration coupons which entitled the holder to purchase a fixed amount on a specific day.  The frequency and amount of a product purchased depended on its scarcity and value.

During this decade, supermarkets experienced significant growth in both numbers and profits.  The convenience, freedom, and affordability (in part owed to retailer coupons) began to draw consumers away from costly, old fashioned local markets.

1950s – Coupons get organized

In 1951, Motorola Inc. offers a free TV shipping guide with a mail-in rebate found in popular magazines.

By 1957, coupons were so widely used that a coupon redemption agency, the Nielsen Coupon Clearing House (later known as the Manufacturers Coupon Control Center), was formed.  The Clearing House entered into partnerships with retailers: the retailers would offer coupons and redeem them, while the Clearing House would organize and calculate how much money was owed to the retailer as reimbursement for honoring the coupons.

1965 – Couponing popularity continues

By this time, half of all American households clipped coupons which were now readily available in newspapers and magazines as well as by mail.

1970s – Coupons become standard newspaper inserts

Consumers started receiving a new form of direct mail marketing: Free Standing Inserts (FSIs) slipped between newspaper and magazine pages.

More than 35 billion coupons were distributed during this decade.  Between 65% and 75% of American households regularly clipped coupons.

In 1974, the Uniform Code Council first implemented Universal Product Codes (barcodes and numbers that universally identified products).  These codes were scanned electronically at the point of sale, making sales and inventory easier than ever before.

1987 – Couponing Centennial

1990s – Couponing gets technical

A burst of technological innovation launched coupons into the online era.  As these new coupons codes gained popularity, paper coupons became more popular than ever.  Retailers began offering both types of coupons on their websites: coupon codes and printable coupons.  Coupon code fraud deterred many consumers from using them, but innovation on the part of the retailers combated threats to the newly christened e-commerce.

Coupons were so widespread that clippable discounts could be found for every sort of product: groceries, fast food, electronics, furniture, and more.

1992 marked a high point in print coupon usage with over 7.9 billion discounts redeemed.

In 1997, 83% of Americans using coupons; consumers save $2.9 billion by redeeming 4.8 billion coupons.  The face value of the average coupon was 64 cents.

September 1998 was dubbed “National Coupon Month.”

In 1999, 81% of American households redeemed grocery coupons weekly; $3.6 billion in coupons ere redeemed that year.

2000s – Recession brings a resurgence in coupon usage

A post-9/11 economy and subsequent financial instability brought coupon usage to a height not seen since the early 1990s.  Couponing became popular for families of all income levels, including the wealthy.  As Internet technology and websites became more sophisticated, coupon aggregators began collecting discounts from all across the web to make finding deals easier.

In 2002, consumers redeemed over 3.6 billion coupons.

By 2008, mobile commerce technology developed to such a degree that consumers could use their mobile devices to display scannable coupons at checkout.

In 2009, the United States Government issued 64 million coupons, each worth $40, for the purchase of digital-to-analog television converters.

2010s – Online coupons go social

Location-based networks, social incentives, and group-buying deals make finding and redeeming coupons more social than ever.  Deals are now available not just for day to day necessities but for luxury purchases like vacation packages, special tours, and high-end electronics.

2012 – Couponing turns 125

The Future – Mobile users are expected to double by 2016.

2015 – Millennials get into couponing

A report released by NCH Marketing Services shows that when millennials become parents, their value-seeking behaviors reflect those of Gen X and baby boomers, with 89% of millennial parents using coupons when planning their shopping, compared to 78% of millennials without children. Millennials with children are more likely to have increased their use of a smartphone to keep a shopping list (48%), get coupons or deals (53%) and download retailer loyalty offers (52%). But coupon use is prevalent across all generations and many parts of the world, with nine of 10 respondents stating they use coupons for their food, over-the-counter medications, household items and health and beauty purchases.

There are many different types of coupons available.

  • Sunday Paper Coupons – The most commonly used coupons are the physical paper coupons that you can get in your Sunday paper. These coupons are generally for grocery store or other food purchases. However many retail stores also provide paper coupons periodically as well.
  • Online Coupons – The next most popular coupons are online coupons. These can be a discount provided as a promotional code that you type in during the checkout process or can be embedded in the link so that the only way you get the offer is if you click on the link provided by the coupon site (other frequently used terms include discount code, coupon code, promo code, voucher code, or just online coupon).
  • Mobile Coupons – Recently mobile coupons have become available. With certain mobile apps, you can download coupons directly to your phone and have them scanned all at once.
  • Daily Deals – Finally, Groupons or daily deals are a version of coupons that are generally good for 50% off or more. However, unlike other versions of coupons that are free and only require payment when the purchase is made, Groupons must be bought before you receive your product or services.

  • Couponasaurus.com – This is a relatively new coupon site that has been growing fast and adding innovative features. In addition to coupons for over 5,000 retailers, Couponasaurus verifies every single online coupon and discount, as well as the stores that deliver the coupon offers.  Making sure that each and every offer is valid and works.

What is the difference between a promo code and a coupon?

In most cases they are synonymous, but generally a promo code is for online use and a coupon is for either in-store or online purchases. For a promo code to work online, all you need to enter is the code provided. For a coupon to work online, sometimes you dont need a code and simply need to click a link to visit the desired store. In these cases, the coupon should be displayed prominently either on the initial landing page or at checkout.

How do I know the coupon will be applied to my purchase?

After you click on the coupon from the coupon site, the discount should be displayed on the first page you land on. However, some times the discount wont show up until you checkout. Just make sure that you can see your discount before you submit your payment info. Many retailers let you enter a coupon code or promo code during the checkout process, just before you provide your credit card information.

Should I pay for coupons?

Do not pay for coupons, EVER. There is no need as you can find all of the coupons you need online for FREE. Also, there is no need to sign up with your name or email address. There are plenty of sites that offer coupons without divulging any information. Of course if you want to sign up for email newsletters from coupon sites, feel free to do so. You will get coupons delivered directly to your inbox.

*Please note that online coupons are different than Groupons. You have to pay for Groupons or other group buying deals in advance. With an online coupon or promo code you don’t actually pay for the coupon, just for the products you wish to purchase.

What is the difference between a Groupon and an online coupon?

The main difference is that a Groupon is a deal that you purchase for future goods or services and is used at a local store. Whereas an online coupon is free and can be used at the time of purchase at a national online store. For example, in order to get the latest Groupon you must purchase the deal from Groupon and use it at some point in the future. You have already paid for the food or service and must visit the location of that store to get the deal. For an online coupon, you can use it whenever you make your online purchase.

What type of sites can I use coupons for?

You can use online coupons for pretty much any site. You can find coupons for savings on everything from apparel to sports equipment to dating sites to electronics and cell phones. As long as the site has an option for entering promo codes or coupon codes during the checkout process, then you can more than likely find a coupon and save money.

Does it matter what type of payment I use to make the coupon work?

In most cases it should not matter what payment method you choose. As long as the eCommerce site accepts the payment, the coupon will still work. However, there are some promotions out there that require you to use a certain payment method such as an American Express card or a new account with BillMeLater. In these cases, the restriction should be clearly listed on the coupon site.

Can I use a coupon multiple times?

For the most part, yes. There may be a few coupons or promo codes that you come across that are one time use coupons only. However, these are few and far between. If you find a coupon you like, you can usually use it as many times as possible until it expires.

1. a coupon included in an advertisement (as in a newspaper) which is clipped and scanned at checkout to receive a discount

Example: In the newspaper, Sally finds an advertisement for Folgers coffee which includes a bar code to receive $1 Folgers products.

Origin: In the 1980s, coupons became associated with periodicals.  Advertisements with coupons often took up at least ? of the newspaper.

Blinkies

1. free retailer or manufacturer coupons dispensed from machines mounted on shelves in store aisles; they can be used in stores for a purchase on the date taken or saved for use at a later date as long as they are used by the expiration date printed on them.
2. the coupon-producing machines that are mounted on shelves in store aisles

Example: While shopping for allergy medicine, Sally finds a blinkie for Claritin and saves $2 on her purchase of Claritin D.

Origin: The machine that produces the coupon is built with a blinking light (usually red or green) intended to attract the attention of a shopper walking down an aisle.  The machines are typically mounted on a shelf near the item for which the subsequent coupon may be used.

BOGO (Buy One Get One, B1G1)

1. a discount where the purchase of one item (or type of item) earns the buyer a second item (or type of item) free of charge;

Origin: The original promotion phrase “Buy One, Get One” was abbreviated into the fun-sounding acronym “BOGO.”

1. a coupon that is printed at checkout and handed to the customer with their receipt

2. Two types of Catalina:

  • On Your Next Order (OYNO): coupon that offers a discount on a customer’s entire purchase during their next transaction
  • Manufacturer’s Coupon: a coupon that offers a discount on a specific brand related or similar to the customer’s purchases in their most recent transaction

Example: Sally bought a package of Jimmy Dean sausages.  After checking out, she received a Catalina with her receipt that gave her $2 off a package of Adele sausage on her next purchase.

Origin: Catalina is the name of the company, Catalina Network, which used scanner-based technology to retrieve information on and respond to customers.  They produce the machines that print the Catalina coupons.

Coupon Policies (Retailer Couponing Policies)

1. the guidelines and regulations of particular retailer with regard to coupons (how many coupons can be applied towards an item, double couponing, couponing in conjunction to storewide sales, etc.); most retailers have their own policy, and every retailer has different rules.  Retailers should make their coupon policies available in stores or online; customers can always ask retailer staff or managers if they have any questions about the couponing policies.

Example: Sally had three coupons for toothpaste: one manufacturer’s coupon, one Walgreens retailer coupon, and one Walmart retailer coupon.  She read Walmart’s coupon policy to find out that she could use only one coupon per item, but Walgreens coupon policy said she could use up to one manufacturer’s and one retailer (Walgreens) coupon on her purchase.

Discount Gift Card (DCG)

1. a gift card for sale that is priced at less than its value; DCGs are usually resold by owners who do not want or need them anymore.  These kinds of savings are rarely offered by coupons at stores.

Example: Blair had a gift card to Bebe with a balance of $54 on it.  She wasn’t going to use the rest of it, so she sold it as a discount gift card for $45.  She got some of her balance back, and the buyer enjoyed getting essentially $9 of free merchandise.

Do Not Double (DND)

1. a denotation on a coupon indicating that it cannot be doubled in value to double the discount on an item or purchase

Two types of Do Not Double coupons:

  • DND-5: the barcode on the coupon starts with 5; while the coupon says “Do Not Double” the coupon can be manually overridden by the cashier
  • DND-9: the barcode on the coupon starts with 9; this coupon is coded in such a way that it cannot be doubled

Example: Sally had planned to get $2 off her laundry detergent by doubling her $1 coupon, but she DND denotation and a barcode starting with the number 9 let her know that doubling this coupon was not going to happen.

Origin: Manufacturers started putting “DND” on their coupons to protect themselves financially since they have to reimburse the retailer for not only the face value of the coupon but a small handling fee.  Retailers then become responsible for covering any additional loss incurred by a doubled coupon; since they don’t want to lose money, many retailers have stopped double couponing.

Double Coupon

1. to double the value of a single coupon to get twice the discount.  Retailers may have double coupon promotions or regularly practice double couponing; customers should check with specific retailers to their policies on  double couponing (e.g. maximum amount doubled)

Example: Sally wanted to double coupon at the grocery store; she took in her $1 off dog food coupon and was able to double it and get $2 off.

Embedded Coupon

1. an online discount that requires no code for redemption; it is automatically applied at checkout

2. a coupon code that is automatically applied towards a purchase at checkout when the customer clicks on a particular coupon link

Example: Tyler clicked on a coupon link for 20% off monitors; when he added a new monitor to his shopping cart and proceeded to checkout, the 20% discount was automatically applied to his total.

Origin: As the name implies, embedded coupons are built into a specific link and carried over automatically; this distinguishes them from other online coupons where customers must manually copy and paste the coupon into a online coupon box.

Expiring Coupon

1. a paper or online coupon which will become invalid on the printed date.  Expiring coupons can be used on the date of expiration typically until midnight.

Example: Sally had an expiring coupon that would expire on December 31; she made sure she used it in early December to get her savings.

Free Shipping (Free Delivery, Free Shipping & Handling, Free S&H)

1. an online retailer promotion which offers no extra costs or fees for shipping a product to a customer’s home or office

2. an online retailer practice of charging no extra fees for a certain tier of shipping methods, usually the slowest and most inexpensive

Example: Sally was in no rush to receive the book she ordered from Amazon; she chose the 2-day free shipping option instead of the next day $17 shipping option.

Origin: Free shipping may seem like an industry standard today, but handling and transportation fees have been a part of business for ages.  Only with the advent of e-commerce and online shopping has business through the Internet become so cost effective that charging nothing for shipping is now a viable business solution.

Gift Card

1. a preloaded debit card that allows the cardholder to use it for the purchase of goods or services; the card becomes invalid once the remaining balance is spent

2. a preloaded debit card which can be reloaded by adding funds for continuous use

Two types of gift cards:

  • retailer gift card: can only be used a select retailers e.g. Starbucks, Walmart
  • unlimited use: can be used at any retailer which accepts credit cards; specifies only a dollar amount, not a place where it must be used e.g. Visa, American Express

Example: Megan received a Starbucks gift card for her birthday and, when she had used its balance, reloaded to keep a set amount of her coffee budget on her card.

Origin: In the mid 1990s, major retailers including Blockbuster and Kmart started moving away from paper gift certificates which were easily lost or damaged.  Inspired by digital card technology used with prepaid phone cards, gift card programs became widely used and very popular.  Retailers even noticed that cardholders usually spent more than the value of the card when purchasing full price items.

Grocery Coupons

1. a ticket or document that is redeemed for a financial discount when purchasing grocery products

Example: Sally organizes her inserts and clippings into piles of grocery coupons for use at the store and other coupons specific to different non-grocery retailers like Hobby Lobby and Lowe’s.

Origin: C.W. post created and distributed the first one-cent coupon for his health cereal, Grape Nuts, to customers in the late 1800s.

Limit (Lt)

1. a parameter in a coupon’s fine print that designates how many coupons can be used in what circumstances or in conjunction with other coupons

Common types of limits:

  • One Coupon per Transaction: one coupon can be used for each total transaction.  If a customer wants to use multiple coupons, they must complete multiple transactions e.g. two coupons for milk quarts requires two separate transactions for milk quarts
  • One Coupon per Purchase: one coupon can be used for each item purchased in a transaction e.g. two coupons for milk quarts allows the purchase of two milk quarts in the same transaction
  • One Coupon per Visit: one coupon per item per visit to a retailer e.g. two coupons for milk quarts requires the customer, after making an initial purchase of a milk quart with the coupon, to leave the store and return later that day or another day to use the second coupon
  • One per Customer: the coupon can be used only once by one customer; the coupon cannot be used within the same transaction or visit e.g. the customer can use one milk coupon in one transaction and must leave, return and perform another transaction to use the second coupon

Example: Sally used a coupon with a limit of one coupon per purchase and was able to use a coupon for almost every item she bought.

Manufacturer’s Coupon

1. a coupon issued by a product manufacturer to increase the sale of a specific product

Example: Sally found a manufacturer’s coupon for toothpaste; since the coupon was for the specific brand of toothpaste, she had her choice of retailers when it came to redeeming it.

Origin: In 1887, Asa Candler, the co-owner of Coca-Cola, began marketing hand-written tickets offering consumers a free glass of Coca-Cola.  The promotion was so popular that the product was being sold in every state in the country within 10 years.  The focused promotion on the part of the manufacturer made their product their single most popular.

Online Coupon (coupon code, discount code, promo code, promotion code, voucher code)

1. a code, composed of a series of characters like numbers and letters, that is entered into an online coupon box at checkout from an online shopping site; the code then applies a specific discount if the items in the shopping cart meet certain criteria.  Coupons must be entered exactly as they appear to redeem the discount from the retailer; case sensitive codes are not uncommon.

Online coupons can offer any number of discounts (just as paper coupons) from free shipping to a sale on a particular product or brand to a percentage off your entire purchase.  Customers should always read the requirements of the online coupon to make sure they can apply it to their purchase.

Example: Sally finds an online coupon to Target for $5 off apparel, shoes and accessories with a purchase of $50 or more.  She finds $50 worth of clothes on Target’s website, adds them to her shopping cart, and then enters the online coupon code to redeem her discount at checkout.

Origin: Online coupons first start to appear on e-commerce sites as online shopping becomes more popular.

Paper Coupon

1. any retailer or manufacturer’s coupon printed on a tangible piece of paper that can be redeemed in retailers’ stores; they can be printed or clipped.  Paper coupons include all their fine print and limits printed right on them; customers are encouraged to read these restrictions and guidelines before attempting to redeem them.

Example: Sally collects all her paper coupons from inserts, blinkies and Catalinas before she goes to the grocery store.

Origin: Paper coupons were originally hand-written vouchers used to market products in the late 1800s.  They took off in popularity and have become a part of shopping culture for more than a century.

Peelie

1. a coupon attached to a product that can be removed to redeem the discount; they may be either manufacturer or retailer coupons

Example: Sally was pleasantly surprised when she discovered the peelie on the bag of chips that would let her save money on that one item.

Origin: The name comes from the way the coupon is attached to the product.  Like hang tags which hang around the neck of an item, peelies are attached with a non-permanent adhesive and can be peeled off to be redeemed.

Printable Coupon

1. retailer or manufacturer coupons found online intended for use in stores; they can be downloaded or printed directly from an Internet browser and then redeemed during checkout.  Customers should only download coupons from reputable coupon sites like official retailer or manufacturer’s websites.

Example: Sally found a great printable coupon for AC Moore that would let her get 50% off any regular priced item.  She printed the coupon, took it to the store, and redeemed it on a new die cut machine she wanted for scrapbooking.

Origin: Printable coupons blend both paper and online coupons, bridging the gap between searching for coupons easily online and redeeming them instantly in stores.

Online Coupon Box (promotion code box, checkout box, coupon code box)

1. a special field of an online checkout page where the customer can enter an online coupon code and apply it’s discount to the purchase; the box can appear at different stages of the checkout process or be hidden until a certain link is clicked depending on the retailer

Example: Before finalizing her sale from Sears online, Sally entered her online coupon code into the online coupon box to apply it’s discount to her purchase.  Once she confirmed that the coupon had worked, she proceeded with checkout.

Price Match

1. to match prices or promotions of a retailer’s competitors; price matching can be an ongoing practice or a short-term/seasonal event

Example: Brad got a deal on new tires because he showed his Ford dealership a competitor’s lower tire price during Ford’s Price Match Guarantee promotion.

Origin: The phrase comes from the practice of matching (or in some cases beating) the prices of competitors.

Rebate (Mail-In Rebate, MIR)

1. a discount on specific goods provided by manufacturers.  The most popular form of this discount is the mail in rebate which requires the submission of a rebate coupon, transaction receipt and proof of purchase in the form of a Universal Product Code to the manufacturer by mail which will result in a reimbursement or prize (gift card, free item, etc)

Example: Tyler used a mail-in rebate to get reimbursed for his printer which was free with the purchase of his new laptop (after the rebate, of course).

Retailer Coupon (Store Coupon)

1. a coupon offering a discount specific to products of a particular retailer than of a manufacturer.  While retailers do not always receive reimbursements from store coupons, they are rewarded with the customer’s business.  Since so many products from the same manufacturers are offered at different retailers, retailers try to attract consumer attention away from their competitors with retailer coupons.  Retailer coupons

Example: Sally buys her household essentials from the big name retailer that has the best coupons available during any given week.

Origin: Retailer coupons were first used by Super Markets in the 1940s who wanted to attract consumer attention away from their local markets where the same manufacturer products were available.

Sale

1. a promotion in which some or all of a retailer’s products are sold at discounted prices; while many in-store sales are reflected on retailer websites, some online sales are exclusive to Internet shoppers and not available in stores

2. a section of a retailer’s website where products (usually outmoded or out of season) are sold at huge clearance discounts to deplete the old stock

Example: Brad bought a new set of golf clubs on Black Friday.  While the department store was more crowded than he’d ever seen it, the prices during the Black Friday sale might never be that low again any time soon.

Sitewide Coupon

1. a coupon that can be applied to all items available for purchase from an online store; will typically include some restrictions such as a minimum purchase value.

Example: Sally could use her 15% off coupon code on anything she wanted as long as her checkout total was over $50.

Stacking

1. to combine two or more coupons in order to receive a greater discount on a purchase; such combinations can include a manufacturer coupon and a retailer coupon, multiple retailer coupons, multiple manufacturer coupons, etc.  Retailer couponing policies can restrict the number and type of coupons used in stacking.

Example: Sally has a 20% Off coupon to Bed Bath & Beyond as well as a $5 Off for all Pyrex products.  She plans on stacking her coupons to save a combined $5 +  20% on her next Pyrex purchase.

Tearpad

1. a stack of coupons displayed in a store’s shelf, display or refrigerator door near the product for which offer a discount; customers can tear a coupon from the stack and present it with the product at checkout to redeem the discount.

2. a stack of coupons as described above that offer instead a mail-in rebate instead of an in-store discount

Example: Sally was shopping for tortilla chips when she found a tearpad near her favorite brand offering $1 Off coupons.  She tore off a coupon and received a discount at checkout.

Universal Product Code (UPC)

1. an identification marker affixed to all manufacturer products usually consisting of both a bar code and a 12-digit number.  The UPC are designed to be scanned electronically as well as cut out and mailed in with rebates.

Example: When Sally brings her groceries home, she cuts out the Universal Product Codes of anything for which she has a mail-in rebate.  The discount might come a bit delayed, but she eventually capitalizes on the promotion thanks to the UPC.

Origin: Universal Product Codes were first implemented by the Uniform Code Council in 1974 as a way of tracking at the point of sale the types and quantities of grocery products sold rather than constantly taking inventory.  Manufacturers apply for permission to enter the UPC system, pay an annual fee, and can place unique UPCs on their products regardless of the retailer location.  The system proved so efficient and successful that bar codes are the primary identification model used with most retail products today.

International Coupon Use on the Rise

Around the world, coupon use appears to be on the increase as expansion of markets and retailers drive coupon use and competition up in developing countries. China holds the top spot of reported coupon use as a strategy to save money, while the U.S.A. and U.K. follow closely. The below data provides a sampling of coupon redemption and use both online and in physical store locations.

General Worldwide Coupon Redemption Trends

The data shows that among the top countries using coupons to save money, there is no clear-cut trend among the countries. China and the U.S. top the list, but other large countries are missing from the list. Belgium and Portugal represent the only two countries in Western Europe. There is a mixture of developed and developing countries on the list, with no countries from the Middle East or Africa represented in the top 10. Reported use of coupons is greatest in North America (65%) and Asia Pacific (55%). The United States (66%), China (67%) and Hong Kong (65%) are the three leading markets for reported coupon use as a way to save money.

China and promotion

  • 35% of hypermarket sales in key cities are sold on promotion—a stable contribution over the past two years.  In most Asian countries, simple price cut promotions are the main promotional vehicle supported by direct mail leaflets and newspaper advertising.

Europe has inconsistent coupon usage

  • While 385 of European consumers indicate using coupons to save, there is wide variation within the continent. While at least half of consumers reported coupon use in several western and southern European countries, such as Belgium and Portugal (63%), Greece (55%), France (53%), and Spain (50%), in other markets, particularly in northern and Eastern Europe, coupon use is much less prevalent.  Belgians are the record holders in terms of coupon redemption, but in countries like Germany or the Netherlands, their usage is very marginal.  Many retailers in Europe are rather reluctant towards that practice.

Low coupon usage in Latin America, Middle East, Africa

  • In Latin America and in Middle East/Africa, reported coupon use is much less common as a saving strategy. Only 25% of consumers in Latin America and 18 percent of respondents from Middle Eastern/African markets report using coupons. In the Middle East, price cuts is the most popular promotional vehicle used by retailers along with volume discounts.  However, consumers are gaining a greater awareness of leaflets, which are driving store visits and prompting retailers to actively advertise promotions in newspapers.

Couponing Trends in 5 Countries Around the World

China

  • It’s a relatively new and youth-oriented phenomenon in China, where consumerism has taken off only as the country has shifted from central planning to capitalism and started to grow.
  • There are coupon kiosks in subways, malls and supermarkets, and almost every major brand offers a discount card. Eyeball China, a Beijing-based company, prints 170,000 coupons every day for restaurants, car rentals and other goods and services and places them in about 200 kiosks across the capital.
  • “The market is so saturated with brand names that a small discount makes a huge difference helping the brand stand out with their target consumers,” said Xie Dehui, Eyeball China’s vice general manager.
  • China’s biggest online shopping site, Taobao.com, has more than 150 million registered users. The website connects buyers and sellers who offer everything from cars to English lessons and often have direct connections to Chinese manufacturers offering steep discounts.”We looked to online promotions since many of our customers are part of the post-’80s and ’90s generation,” said Cai Gongming, a Mercedes vice president. “It’s a big trend right now. … They are familiar with online group buying.”
  • Nuomi.com, previously little-known, became an overnight sensation in June by offering a $25 package of two movie tickets, two sodas, ice cream and popcorn for only $6. It sold about 150,000 packages, generating nearly $900,000 in sales over a 24-hour period.

Germany

  • Couponing has become widespread throughout Germany: Only 20% of Germans have not used any form of coupons
  • 60% of Germans feel that couponing will take on a more important role in citizens’ shopping habits in the future
  • Four out of ten coupon users redeem coupons at least once a month.
  • Coupons are used most frequently at supermarkets
  • Coupons are mostly associated with vouchers and discounts (27% of all types)
  • when asked to think about coupon providers, Germans primarily think about supermarkets, and shopping centres, etc.
  • As regards the usage of different types of coupons, classic discount coupons have a strong lead, “mobile” coupons are not (yet) well known
  • Price savings are seen as the biggest advantage of using coupons
  • PAYBACK is by far the best-known couponing provider (86 percent)- more used than Groupon
  • Payback is also seen as by far the most trustworthy (55 percent) and versatile couponing provider (60 percent)

United Kingdom

  • Online Coupons prove most popular
  • YouGov survey highlights consumers more likely to redeem coupons printed online compared to those sourced elsewhere
  • New YouGov research conducted on behalf of and published by Coupons.com in the UK and Europe has highlighted the increasing influence of printable-coupons in influencing consumers’ purchasing habits.
  • The survey, which draws on a nationally representative sample of 1,790 adults across the UK, showed an 11% year-on-year increase in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and supermarket coupon redemptions. The survey also found 28% of consumers were more careful to remember coupons when heading to the supermarket, and 16% were using coupons more than they were a year ago.
  • While approximately 60% of all coupons redeemed in the UK were retailer specific or from retailer loyalty programmes, such as Tesco Clubcard or Nectar, the research also revealed a significant and growing opportunity for both retailers and brands alike to adopt and embrace printable coupons, with 57% of consumers having printed an online coupon and a massive 81% of the respondents who had previously never printed a coupon, indicating that they would be willing to do so. Furthermore, the research highlighted that women aged 25-39 showed the highest rates of participation in the use of online coupons.
  • Furthermore, the research shows that if consumers knew that there were coupons available, 52% would be willing to visit a retailer’s website and 42% willing to visit a brand’s website.

Brazil

  • Brazil had the most far-reaching visitors to the category of coupons with 16.1%, representing a total audience of 6.8 million visitors.
  • Brazil is Groupon’s largest audience in Latin America, with 2.5 million visitors representing 6% of internet users
  • Brazil has a more mature coupon market compared to other countries in the region

“The popularity of the movement once affiliated with the budget-conscious middle class now cuts across all gender, age and socioeconomic groups. We see that the biggest adopters tend to be high income earners.  The most popular sites traffic in deals on restaurants, travel, classes and services like teeth-whitening. These aren’t exactly luxury items, but they are aimed at people with disposable income – and that’s exactly who’s buying.”[1]

With the value offered by coupons, one might think that the lowest income households would be among the heaviest users. In fact, more affluent households dominate coupon usage:[3]

  • 38% of “super heavy” users and
  • 41% of “enthusiasts” come from households with incomes greater than $70,000.
  • Households with income of $100,000 and up were the primary drivers of coupon growth in 2009.
  • The enthusiast category also attracts a disproportionate number of households with incomes between $50,000 and $69,900.

  • Northeasterners are 66% more likely than West Coasters to be coupon lovers.
  • The middle-aged are more likely than younger generations to have a strong opinion about online coupons.
  • Coupon lovers are 220% more likely than abstainers to highly value tradition, and 96% more likely to highly value self-direction.
  • Devoutly religious people are 31% more likely to be coupon lovers and substantially less likely to be Libertarians are 47% more likely to be online coupon users
  • Self-identified insecure, temperamental people are 33% more likely to be abstainers.
  • Detached, sophisticated, careless and procrastinating people are also each at least 20% more likely to be coupon abstainers.
  • Men are 27% more likely to be coupon abstainers.
  • Insecure, low-income men are the quintessential coupon abstainers, being 130% more likely to avoid online coupons. Those with household incomes of less than $50,000 per year are a fifth as likely to be coupon lovers.

Couponing by City[5]

For the second year in a row, Atlanta takes the top spot on the ‘Most Frugal U.S. Cities’ list, according to the 2010 Savings Index1 released by Coupons.com. On average, regular users of Coupons.com in Atlanta printed more than $1,000 dollars in coupon savings from the site in 2010. That is almost twice as much as during 2009, when they printed $531 in savings.

The Average Coupon User

“In summary the profile of the mostly likely coupon user is: white, female, 25-44 years old, married with no children or with younger children. They live in the suburbs, have at least some college education and make more than $50,000 a year. They have Internet access, own their home, and prefer texting to calling on their phone. Coupon users are now younger, affluent, and tech-savvy – pretty much the exact opposite of the stereotype of coupon users.” -Afullcup.com[10]

Here are some more highlights of coupon users. It is difficult to pinpoint the average coupon user because couponers span every demographic, age group, and gender. We can only point to certain statistics and say that certain groups and demographics use coupons more than another group, but you can only get the whole picture when you take in the group as a whole.

  • Women are 67% more likely than men to be coupon lovers. [8]
  • The age group that is most likely to coupon is those 35-44. [9]
  • According to NCH, Asians are the highest percentage of consumers who use coupons – 96.4%. Blacks consumers use coupons the least as a percentage – at 87.9%. [9]
  • Three-fourths of coupon users are Caucasian [2]
  • Households residing in comfortable country and suburban spreads are more likely to be heavier coupon users, while non-users are more apt to be those households living in rural areas and urban core areas. [2]
